Syrups for Coffee and How to Use Them

Adding different flavours to coffee dates back several centuries, although coffee culture and coffee syrups have certainly evolved since then. During the earlier times pumpkin spice syrups weren’t being added to lattes, however in the 15th century people would often use spices such as cardamon and cinnamon to add an extra layer of flavour to their coffee. These unique culinary traditions remain very popular in different countries around the world, such as Moroccan coffee which is made from blend of spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves to create beautiful warm spiced coffee.

Coffee syrups have increased in popularity as coffee makers have made it easier for people to recreate their favourite coffee shop orders at home with convenient home coffee brewing tools and handy coffee syrup dispensers. Below we have listed some of our favourite coffee syrup flavours to level up your coffee.

Seasonal coffee syrups

Pumpkin Spice Coffee Syrup

Pumpkin spice and all things nice! You know autumn is just around the corner when the seasonal staple pumpkin spiced lattes come out of hibernation. The pumpkin spice syrup gives a warm comforting flavour with a subtle note of sweet pumpkin combined with a blend of aromatic spice of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove served with whipped cream for extra decadence.

Vanilla Coffee Syrup

Adding in a couple of pumps of vanilla syrup can take your coffee to the next level, this classic flavouring gives you a sweet and velvety taste. Although vanilla is sometimes considered a boring flavour to choose from, it is a versatile syrup which can be used beyond flavouring your favourite Penningtons coffee. You can add in into cocktails, yogurts, porridge along with many other things. Vanilla syrup for coffee can be easily made from home with 3 simple ingredients, water, sugar and vanilla extract.

Hazelnut Coffee Syrup

Hazelnut syrup is another autumnal favourite which can be enjoyed all year around, whether you prefer your coffee black or a milky latte, a couple of pumps of hazelnut syrup adds a delicious nutty flavour to every sip. Hazelnut coffee can also be mixed with other syrups to create delicious flavours, adding white chocolate syrup can create a delicious chocolaty nutty flavour similar to a very well known hazelnut chocolate bar.

Caramel Syrup

Caramel syrup for coffee is one of the most popular flavours of coffee syrup and you will most certainly find this in almost every coffee shop across the country. This sweet classic choice of coffee syrup is versatile and can be used all year round as it is perfect in both hot and iced drinks. Not only can you flavour your favourite Penningtons coffee with it but why not try adding it to Penningtons hot chocolate for a rich chocolate caramel flavour.

How much syrup to put in coffee?

Coffee syrups are an effortless way to add a sweet flavouring to your coffee, how much coffee syrup you add in quite simply comes down to personal preference as the more syrup you add into your coffee the more enhanced the flavour will be. Most coffee shops will add in two pumps of coffee syrup but if you have a sweet tooth you may prefer to add an extra shot in. However, the intensity of the flavour can vary depending on the concentration of the syrup, we would recommend using a smaller amount and then build up if more is needed, a little most definitely goes a long way!

Most coffee shops and cafes will offer a sugar free syrup for coffee, so if you’re limiting your calories it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a delicious flavoured coffee. Sugar free coffee syrup is a great alternative for those who want a sweet treat without the added calories and sugar.

 How to use coffee syrup

To make a flavoured latte with coffee syrup you will need, either an espresso or 40ml of strongly brewed Penningtons coffee, your favourite mug, coffee syrup, milk, a metal jug or pan and either a steam wand or hand whisk.

  1. Make an espresso or 40ml of strongly brewed Penningtons coffee with your preferred coffee maker and add it into a mug or latte glass.
  2. Add the coffee syrup and stir to combine, we would always recommend adding 1 to 2 pumps or teaspoons to start with and if you prefer it sweeter you can add more.
  3. Add 250ml of your preferred choice of milk to a jug and steam using the steam wand on your coffee machine. If you don’t have a coffee machine you can add your milk into a pan and whisk over a medium heat until it starts to thicken up.
  4. Pour the frothy milk over your Penningtons coffee and create some coffee art.
  5. Enjoy!
