Why Peruvian Coffee Deserves a Place in Your Cup

In recent years, Peruvian coffee has quietly risen to become one of the most respected and exciting origins in the world of specialty coffee. While it may not yet enjoy the same global recognition as Colombia or Ethiopia, Peru is quickly becoming a favourite among roasters and coffee lovers who value exceptional quality, traceability, and sustainability.

At Penningtons, we’re proud to feature outstanding coffees from Peru—like our new La Cima from the Cajamarca region—because they represent the best of what specialty coffee can be: vibrant, balanced, and ethically produced.

The Unique Appeal of Peruvian Coffee

Peru offers a diverse landscape that’s perfect for growing high-quality Arabica coffee. The country’s mountainous terrain, ranging from 1,200 to over 2,000 meters above sea level, creates the high-altitude conditions ideal for slow bean development. This leads to complex flavours and bright acidity in the cup.

Regions like Cajamarca, Cusco, and San Martín are now known for producing beans with notes of citrus, tropical fruit, florals, and chocolate, often with a clean, balanced finish. These profiles make Peruvian coffees incredibly versatile—whether you enjoy filter brews or espresso.

Smallholder Farmers and Specialty Focus

What truly sets Peruvian coffee apart is its strong network of smallholder farmers, many of whom cultivate just a few hectares of land. With increasing support from cooperatives, NGOs, and the Peruvian government, these farmers are embracing sustainable farming practices and investing in better processing techniques like fully washed or honey processes, resulting in more consistent, high-quality lots.

Many coffees, like La Cima, are traceable to a group of producers working together to improve their yields, quality, and community well-being. This transparency is a core value of the specialty coffee movement—and one we strongly support at Penningtons.

Sustainability from Farm to Cup

Sustainability doesn’t stop at origin. We’ve taken steps at our UK roastery to ensure that every bean we roast is handled with care for both flavour and the planet.

That’s why all Penningtons coffee, including our Peruvian selections, is now roasted on a fully electric roaster powered by solar energy. This means our operation is carbon neutral—cutting down emissions and reducing our footprint while delivering fresh, flavorful coffee you can feel good about.

Why We Love La Cima

Our featured Peruvian coffee, La Cima, comes from the lush slopes of Cajamarca near the edge of the Amazon. It’s grown between 1,500–1,800 meters above sea level and features Caturra and Catuai varieties—both known for their sweet, clean profiles.

In the cup, La Cima offers a vibrant trio of mango, lemon, and apricot, balanced by a smooth, juicy body. It’s a bright, approachable coffee that suits every brewing method, from your morning filter to a sunny afternoon espresso.

A Coffee You Can Feel Good About

Choosing Peruvian coffee means supporting small-scale farmers, encouraging sustainable practices, and enjoying one of the most exciting flavour profiles in specialty coffee today. And with Penningtons’ solar-powered roasting, you’re also making a more environmentally responsible choice without sacrificing taste or quality.
