The AeroPress is a versatile and compact coffee maker loved for its ability to brew a smooth, rich cup with minimal bitterness. It’s easy to use, and you can experiment with different brewing methods to suit your taste. Below is a simple guide for a classic AeroPress coffee.
Place a paper filter into the AeroPress cap and rinse it with hot water. This removes any papery taste and preheats the brewing equipment. Attach the cap with the filter to the AeroPress chamber and place it over your mug.
For best results, use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:15 to 1:17. A common starting point is 15 grams of coffee to 225 grams (ml) of water for one cup. Grind your coffee to a medium-fine consistency, similar to table salt.
Place the AeroPress on your mug or a stable surface, ensuring it is secure to prevent any wobbling or spills during the brewing process. Add the ground coffee to the chamber, tapping or gently shaking it to level the grounds for an even extraction.
Start your timer and pour hot water over the coffee grounds, just enough to wet them evenly (about 30-50 grams). Stir gently to ensure all the grounds are saturated and allow it to bloom for 30 seconds.
Slowly pour the remaining hot water into the AeroPress chamber until you reach your desired amount. Stir the coffee again to mix it thoroughly.
Insert the plunger into the chamber and press down slowly and steadily. Aim for about 20-30 seconds to complete the press. You’ll feel resistance, which is normal. Stop pressing as soon as you hear a hissing sound to avoid over-extraction.
Remove the AeroPress and discard the used coffee grounds and filter. Stir your coffee in the mug to balance the flavours. Enjoy it as is or add milk and sugar if desired.
