Making stovetop espresso with a Moka pot is a classic and simple way to brew rich, flavourful coffee at home. Follow these steps to achieve the perfect cup:
Fill the bottom chamber of the Moka pot with water. Use water that’s just below boiling for the best results, as this helps prevent the pot from overheating. Fill up to the safety valve—don’t overfill.
Scoop the ground coffee into the filter basket until it’s full, without packing it down. Level off the coffee with your finger or a flat surface. Avoid pressing the coffee.
Place the filter basket into the bottom chamber, ensuring no coffee grounds are on the edges. Screw on the top chamber tightly but not excessively—make sure it’s sealed properly to prevent leaks.
Place the Moka pot on the hob over medium heat. If you’re using a gas stove, make sure the flames don’t extend beyond the bottom of the pot to avoid overheating the handle.
As the water heats, it will create steam and pressure, pushing the water through the coffee grounds and into the upper chamber. You’ll hear a gurgling sound as the coffee begins to flow.
Once the upper chamber is full and the brewing process slows (you’ll hear the bubbling ease), remove the Moka pot from the heat. This prevents the coffee from burning and ensures a smoother taste.
Stir the coffee in the upper chamber with a spoon to balance the flavour. Pour into cups and enjoy your homemade espresso as is or with milk for a cappuccino or latte.
